The Exotic Chinese Palm pathway
This Chinese palm pathway (Trachycarpus fortunei) opposite the farmhouse is the second historical focus at La Bambouseraie.
For centuries fibres from their trunks were used to used to make ropes, brushes, weave waterproof clothes or even to stuff matresses !
The new leaves were used to make fans and hats.
The flowering buds are edible and can be consumed in the same way as bamboo shoots. This variety is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine notably for their hemeostatic virtues.
Resistant to cold (up to -18°c) Trachycarpus fortunei is one of only 2 or 3 species cultivated in France.
